From "Dietz History and Cookbook 1990", compiled by Sharon Pierce Schier and Maybell McAbee Bates:

"Johann Friedrich ‎(2)‎ Dietz, son of Johann Friedrich ‎(l)‎, was born in the Rhineland Palatinate around 1738. He came to America with his father and the rest of the family aboard the Ship Edinburgh, arriving in Philadelphia on 15 September 1749. The family settled in the Southwark township of
Philadelphia. Like his father, Johann Friedrich 2 was also known as Frederick.
On 6 August 1758, Johann Friedrich 2 Dietz married Catharina Christina Rissler in Gloria Dei ‎(Old Swedes')‎ Church in Philadelphia. Christina is believed to have been the daughter of George Henry Rissler,
another German immigrant aboard the Ship Edinburgh, but this has not been proven.
Like his father, Frederick2 was a tailor. He and his family lived in the Southwark district of Philadelphia, and most of their children were baptized at St. Michael/Zion Lutheran Church in Philadelphia. Apparently, however, during the American Revolution, they moved out to Lancaster County for the duration of the war. It appears that there were other Dietz kinfolk living in that area. Frederick2, Christina, and their
family lived in New Holland in Earl Township, Lancaster County, and they are listed as communicant members at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church there.
All the sons of Frederick2 and Christina who survived to adulthood--except Daniel3, who stayed in Philadelphia--migrated to the Hickory area of Lincoln County, North Carolina. John3 was the first of these five brothers to take the Old Philadelphia Wagon Road south, settling in North Carolina by 1790. He was a potter, a farmer, and a merchant, owning a country store by the road. According to information in 'The Heritage of Catawba County, North Carolina, Vol. 1, John3 made yearly trips back to Philadelphia for goods, and on each trip he would bring along a kinsman so that eventually he had brought back Frederick3, Solomon3, Jacob3, and Michael3.
After one trip to Philadelphia for supplies, John3 came back to find his store had been broken into and he sold out his store to his brother Jacob3. Then he and his family moved back up north, possibly to Philade
lphia, then later to Indiana, where he lived until his death in 1845. Frederick3, whose baptismal name is shown as George Friedrich but whose first name is later given as William, was a school teacher by profession, both in Philadelphia and then in Hickory. He drowned in Pott's Creek in 1793, leaving his wife Sabina widowed with several young children: Sarah4, Christina4, Samuel4, David4, and Frederich4. Jacob3 married Sarah Killian, and they had two known children: Lazarus4 and Israel4; they and their desce
ndants remained in the Hickory area. MichaeJ3 married Margaret Sommitt, and they had at least one son, Daniel4, before he died at a young age in 1808. Solomon3, our ancestor, will be described in more detail in the next section.
Christina died sometime between June 1782 and December 1797. In June 1782 she was named god- mother to her granddaughter Christina ‎(Frederick3 and Sabina's daughter)‎, and in the marriage record of DanieI3 Dietz and Margret Brown, dated 12 December 1797, Daniel3 is listed as 'son of Fredk Dietz in Philad. and his decsd wife Christina.'
Frederick2 died sometime between September 1806, when he gave a book to his son Solomon3, and May 1808, when his father Fredrickl made his will. The book which Frederick2 gave to Solomon3 is now in the Lutheran Archives in Salisbury, North Carolina ‎(donated by a descendant of Solomon Jr.)‎. It is written in German, and its translated title is The Destruction of Babel from Midnight and Morning, together with the Great Conversi
on of the Jews, Turks and Heathen following thereupon on the basis of the Holy Scripture and Nature. Inside are written signatures of Friederich2 Dietz ‎(below the date 1798)‎ and Solomon3 Dietz ‎(with the date 1806 below it)‎. On another page is the following inscription:
Solomon Dietz his Book bestowed from my Father Frederick Dietz in Philadelphia September 1806/7 ‎[The T has been written over the T-or the T over the '7'. ]‎

THE ESTATE IN PHILADELPHIA

There have been stories passed down through the years about an inheritance in Philadelphia. Apparently, someone contacted the Dietzes in north Georgia in the early 1900's about some estate in Philadelphia to which they were heirs. Robert Dietz ‎(son of Daniel S. Dietz)‎ wrote a letter to City Hall in Philadelphia around 1930:

Dear Sir:
I have been told there is an estate in the City of Philadelphia that was leased nearly one hundred years ago to the city by one of ay ancestors and at the expiration of the lease it was willed to the Descendants of my Great-Grandfather and to the decents ‎[sic]‎ of his four Brothers. Their surname was Dietz and their given names were John Jacob Solomon Michael and Frederick. They are all dead and to my knowledge all of the second generation are dead and the third generation is widely scattered,
Will you please tell me if these facts are on record and if they are when does the lease expire and who was the ancestor that leased it.
And oblige
Very truly yours,

Robert Dietz

The reply which he received referred him to the Register of Wills, Phila., Pa. Whether he ever found out anything is uncertain.
Clarence Dietz ‎(Hiram's grandson)‎ was also aware of this estate, for he mentioned it in the information which he gave to Mrs. Susie Blaylock McDaniel for her Official History of Catoosa County, Georgia - 1853-1953. He described the man's ‎[Ike Dietz]‎ borrowing the family Bible and carrying it away for the purpose of helping to get the estate settled.
I have also been told that at one time the local Dietz families were offered a share in this estate but wrote back refusing their part. They felt that since they had not worked for it and it was so far removed from them they could not in good conscience claim a share in it.
According to information given to Bonnie Dietz Baker by a descendant of Anna Marie Dietz
‎(a sister of our Christian Friedrich)‎, there were also stories in her branch of the family about an estate in Philadelphia. Someone in that branch had apparently hired an attorney to check out the story, but the attorney was never seen again.
Rumor has it that Ike Dietz and his brother ended up receiving the inheritance. Ike was a cousin from Ohio who visited his cousins in Catoosa County, Georgia, several times in the early 1900's. At one time, Ike stayed for several months and worked for Jake Kellerhals. Whether the report about his getting the inheritance is true, no one knows for certain.
So the enigmatic estate in Philadelphia remains a mystery to this day.
